David Nicol retires from Allan McDougall Solicitors

David Nicol

As 2022 drew to a close, we bid farewell to David Nicol on his retirement from Allan McDougall Solicitors at the end of December.

Having joined the firm in 1984, David became a partner within a couple of years. After 32 years in this role, he stepped down from it in 2017 but remained with the firm in a consultancy capacity.

David specialised in civil litigation and family law. In addition to representing many of the firm’s clients in both the Sheriff Court and Court of Session, he handled several high-profile cases in the House of Lords and the UK Supreme Court.

David also made a valuable contribution to the wider legal profession during his long career. As well as serving on a Law Society of Scotland committee on quality assurance in civil legal aid work across Scotland, he was a solicitor member of the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB). For many years he was also an adviser for a non-profit organisation’s legal clinic as well as a director of Family Mediation Lothian. He continues to be Secretary of the Lothian Valuation Appeal Panel, dealing with Rating and Council Tax Appeals, and as a member of a SLAB committee dealing with high level, complex civil legal aid applications.

Gordon Bathgate, managing partner of the firm, said: “We thank David Nicol for his many years of unstinting service to the firm and our clients. He has enjoyed a long, varied legal career, dealing with a multitude of cases, achieving many successes along the way. My colleagues throughout the firm and I wish him all the very best for a happy, healthy retirement.”
